Yes, I'm behind the times... It's been a bit of a crazy weekend here. And I had to wait for the internet to catch up and then find time... But now, I'm watching it. Running commentary included.. :P
Should I mention I'm not going into this with high hopes for what the episode will hold? So I might seem snarky and rude. I'd apologise but it's my journal... :D
Should I mention I'm not going into this with high hopes for what the episode will hold? So I might seem snarky and rude. I'd apologise but it's my journal... :D
- Not many can send the Doctor messages? SERIOUSLY? Seems like every second episode he's getting a mysterious message from someone....
- Gee, I thought the Doctor liked to help people? Or at least wanted to help people.
- Seriously hope they explain why the Dalek lights suddenly grow out of people's heads. Cause, uh, wasn't the light part of the casing before? I'm going to assume I missed something about Daleks in the past 6 seasons that explains that....
- Well the Daleks were never going to shoot the Doctor before the opening credits.
- Why would someone who is trying to keep themself safe be wearing something so damn impractical?
- Amy, the Doctor-whisperer there.
- Riiiiight, wait. Dalek prison camp? Insane Daleks, that hate more than the rest? Wouldn't the Daleks want them in charge?
- Ok, I do like the fact she checked the Doctor is real. But souffles? Really?
- Gee, for a genius you're a bloody idiot. How could he not see that the predator of the Daleks was him (aside from the fact he hasn't done anything to them since his metacrisis was around, and before that well... Let me think...)
- Least Rory has a good point.
- Since when did the Doctor ignore a person who obviously needed some kind of help?
- Rory, always practical that one.
- Living or dead, living or dead... Sigh, dumbest genius I know.
- Interesting, this Doctor caring about the emotional lives of his companions. Someone needs to get an ice cream for Amy (was that rude?)
- Well, it was either going to be Amy or Rory who lost their wrist band.
- "Egg, egg, egg-sterm-in-ate"... And here I was thinking we'd get a bad joke about eggs and souffles.
- Oswin, flirting with everyone. Mostly Rory, so that's an interesting change. Does every girl on the show flirt? Are they automatically a huge flirt? Do all women flirt this much?
- Who killed all the Daleks? For the first time in.... Well, I actually don't know the last time the Doctor himself actually killed a Dalek. Normally it's a companion, some poor random bystanders... Anyone BUT the Doctor.
- Gee, glad someone is asking questions about how Oswin survived. Genius or not.
- Oh buggerit all, the power of love will conquer all? Ok, I get that it's important but seriously...
- Don't tell me they're going to actually address the way that Amy and Rory's relationship has grown? Nope, nevermind, it's about Amy not being able to have kids. So now she's a noble self-sacrificing woman who will never be complete because she can't have kids. F**k you Moffat.
- Intensive care, survivors of wars and such. Oh look, Daleks who survived encounters with the Doctor. Pfff, he's not exactly that scary if there's alway survivors is he?
- And is it just me or does not one of these Daleks actually have their
whiskweapon? - She's a Dalek. Well, not exactly surprised. There was plenty of hints, and the eggs, egg and egg-sterm-in-ate was probably the most obvious hint.
- Least it wasn't love, just human nature and a bit of genius.
- Rory and Amy reconciling... In the middle of a disaster, of course. No wonder there's problems between 'em.
- *Sighs* Bloody hell Moffat, first episode back and you're already on about the "Doctor Who?" thing again? STOP GOING ON ABOUT THE DOCTOR WHO? THING. I'M SICK OF IT ALREADY!

Date: 2 September 2012 07:04 pm (UTC)Also, they never dealt with the trauma of losing Melody. Fuck, the doppleganger baby DISSOLVED IN AMY'S ARMS and after her freak out at Demon's Run we don't hear about it. True, she spends time away from the Doctor, but losing a child is a horrible, awful thing that will have lasting consequences, EVEN IF they know that River Song is their daughter. They hardly know this woman! And she's regenerated, which means that all the little things that parents know about their children (what color they like, how they act when they're angry, what their favorite food is) has changed. Amy and Rory's split was a long time coming, because they don't exactly deal with their issues. On the TARDIS Amy could escape, could lose herself in another adventure and not think about the monsters that live inside her closet, but in the real world, on the slow path--there is no escape and those monsters come out at night (the ghosts of Christmas past, as it were).
The Doctor wants to 'fix' them, but he can't even fix himself! (Physician, heal thyself) It's like when he took them to Venice--his solution was 'have an adventure!' But that doesn't work on the slow path. There's a reason he keeps running, because he doesn't know how to do anything else. Because he can't stop. Because being married, being in a relationship with another person, that's hard. Paying the bills, having a job, all those things the Doctor deems to be 'domestic'--it takes work. Saving the world is easy. It's life that's hard.
And that's the end of my rant. >.< Sorry!

Date: 2 September 2012 07:15 pm (UTC)Any other writer and I probably would have managed to have more sympathy for Amy and Rory and felt more like it wasn't being said that Amy was now less than a whole person. Given, this is Moffat who literallyh managed to ignore the fact that Amy and Rory lost their first child. She may not have been dead but top them she was truly lost. And knowinf River would not make up for the dissolving flesh baby or the fact they had no chance to raise her.
I decided not to touch on the 'fixing' them issue cause I just cann't wrap m,y head around the Doctor ever doing anything of the sort. But then, I've realised I often refer to Eleven as the Doctor, but tend to think ofhim as Eleven, not the elventh Doctor, just Eleven. When I think of the Doctor, that's Nine and Ten (I haven't seen classic so they sort of fit, but it's a little blurry).
I forgot what I was saying... Whoops.

Date: 2 September 2012 07:22 pm (UTC)The Doctor's reaction to relationship trouble is to have an adventure, but that doesn't work. And I don't exactly think he's qualified to give ANYONE relationship advice considering how he dealt with his own past relationships. In 'All Roads Lead Home' it will definitely be Rose talking to Amy and Rory, because the Doctor is a little too alien to get human relationships. Add in that he's a coward when it comes to those closest to him and you've got one more reason for him to stay away. I could get that he feels guilty, because their daughter is gone because of him, but that's about it.

It's just it seems any problems for Moffat's come down to woman and kids I swear.
I definitely agree, the Doctor doesn't know how to handle a human relationship. He certainly wouldn't have any clue how to fix one. And is much more likely to run away than hang around and try to sort out the mess. Especially if he's in some way responsible.

Date: 2 September 2012 11:51 pm (UTC)About Amy's baby plotline from Season 6:
You tell yourself you’re married and it’s nice, it’s sweet, you’ve got a bit of paper, you’ve had a party, you share a kettle – but really you’re dating. That doesn’t feel tremendous. That’s where the idea of a baby started.
Thanks Moffat, as always, your wisdom astounds me.

I hav no words to describe Moffat now... Except I would like a large mallet, some large nails, possibly a chainsaw... But in the meantime. My favourite Moffat gif.

Date: 2 September 2012 08:22 pm (UTC)instead of just some sort of weird subliminal messaging strategy that Moffat seems to think will buy him more views. And, the Amy Rory thing is seriously starting to annoy me. I liked them together in the beginning, and I thought they were cute, but I hate that they just move between extremes with nothing to bridge them. I mean, Amy ran away with the Doctor ON HER WEDDING NIGHT, and then she wants Rory again, but then there's the whole thing that maybe Amy feels more for the Doctor than him, and then they hate each other in the beginning of this episode and magically make up somewhere in the middle.
It is weird that the women seem to flirt with everyone, but I'm starting to think that maybe that's part of Moffat's style. I mean look at Jack--not saying I don't love the Captain--but the Doctor does act like by the time the human race get far into the future they're pretty much 'dancing' with everyone they come across.
I think they removed the Dalek guns as proof that they were dangerous and couldn't be trusted. It's a pity really, they can't help Oswin make souffles.
Not many can send the Doctor messages? SERIOUSLY? Seems like every second episode he's getting a mysterious message from someone....
Hee, the TARDIS is practically a flying mailbox.
But, I suppose over all I rather liked it. Oswin's time line seems like it's going to be a great big time loop, and the big whigs in Who seem to rather like those lately. Still, It's nice to see that's she's rather intelligent and hopefully she doesn't turn all damsel in distress like Amy did.

The problem is big fancy, overly convoluted time loops are ALL we get any more from the show, it'smade them predictable generally, and for me, rather dull. Especially given there's mostly no need whatsoever for them.

lolllll!!! Right?!?! People phoning him... Time Lord email... psychic paper... archeological graffiti... black boxes...
The Ponds' fallout bugged me because it seemed so sudden, even with Pond Life, and could've been resolved if they'd just talked it out, but they apparently didn't even bother until after they signed the papers and got stuck in a planet overrun with daleks. More development and explanation would've been nice. So many unaddressed issues and a quick resolve chafes at me.

Date: 2 September 2012 08:59 pm (UTC)Of course! Since Moffat's female charatcers wouldn't be complete without a man in their life, they must flirt constantly to ensure they find one AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!
Yeah, the Ponds are like a cartoon romance. Everything is messed up and resolved so quickly and neatly, with no long term fallout. It's blood annoying.
