So, to reinforce the idea that I have too much time on my hands...

I finished watching Game of Thrones. 5 episodes a day, only takes 2 days. Well, nights if you want to be technical. Not really the point.

Would love to be eloquent and meaningful about this show, but I think I actually need time to come up with more to say than it's absolutely bloody brilliant.

To be honest, it's been a long time since a show has drawn me in so quickly and effectively that I've watched the entire thing in such a short time.

I admit, the first thing to hook my attention was how gorgeous the show looks. For something set entirely in fantasy, they've managed to make the world look real. I've been watching fantasy movies and shows my entire life and that's something I completely appreciate. It's a great thing when you can lose yourself in just the aesthetics of the world they're presenting to you.

But beyond how amazing it looks, the story is extremely intriguing. It seems to be always moving, it's not predictable. I mean there's some events I've been able to guess but a lot of it I haven't. Which is a nice change, after you've read and watched a lot of fantasy you tend to be able to figure out plots very quickly. Though it might help that this one has a lot more threads running through. All connected but all a story on their own.

Seriously though, is no character that's safe? Poor Eddard...

And that leads to the characters. The characters have continued to amaze me all the way through. From the honourable ones such as Eddard to the completely despicable such as, well, most of the Lannisters. Nice or not, the majority of the characters are complex and given real motivations, reactions and emotions, if altered due to the nature of the world they exist in.

On the subject of characters, I admit, there is something absolutely amazing about Daenerys. I know I'm no the only one who thinks so. But honestly I think her character has an brilliant story and develops so much over the season. Which works perfectly. She is essentially forced to grow up suddenly and roughly but she does so with strength. Yep, I admit it, love her.

I could probably ramble on more about the show, but that'll do for now....

On a completely different note, lj is being a shit again. I haven't really been getting any notifications, which is just really frustrating.

Agreed on everything!! One of the things I especially love is that anyone could die at anytime - I think that infuses the show with a sense of realism that you don't get when you KNOW that at the end of the episode, the core cast members will all be safe.

It's wonderful, it gets kind of annoying when the only time a main character might die is in a season finale and in some shows you know no one is ever going to die. As you say, a wonderful sense of realism.

Doesn't mean I'm not sad when some of them get killed...

Oh, I love it when people who are new to the series enjoy the show... it was really hard for me, when watching it, to put myself in the shoes of someone who didn't know what was going to happen, so it's good to know that they apparently did it right!

Re: Martin's "anyone can die" philosophy... it's definitely fresh and gutsy, but sometimes I miss knowing my favorites are safe. I'm not going to spoil anything, but let's just say I got surprisingly lucky through the first four books, in that, while there were a lot of deaths, my absolute favorite characters stayed alive. Now I'm terrified to read ADwD (I've been doing a very slow reread of 1-4 since last May, instead), because I'm freaked out that all the main characters left have become favorites...

Yeah, there is always a risk that when you watch a movie or tv show adaptation that you'll feel like you're missing something. I have no doubt there is things that are missing, but you don't feel like you're missing out. I think they succeeded extremely well.

I know what you mean. I love the fact no one is safe, but it does mean you sit there and worry rather a lot about whether the characters you love, and love to hate, are going to survive the next episode/book.
