Supernatural season 1 or....

...How I spent this week procrastinating. Yep, this is what I do when I'm considering uni work.
I find new (or not so new) and exciting things to watch or play. Is it bad that I'm replaying Final Fantasy X, again?
Mind you, in my defence this game is still brilliant, if slightly painful to play on newer TVs.

But mostly, I was watching Supernatural season 1....
So admittedly it was almost a week ago, but I watched this weeks Once Upon a Time with great curiosity. I've wondered when we'd get a bit more about Ruby/Red Riding Hood.
(If you haven't watched it yet and plan too, might want to stop reading now)
I gotta say, I wasn't disappointed with Ruby/Red's story. Though I rarely am with this show. The long running idea of Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf is well known, but the idea that they're one and the same. I like it. Especially the fact that the read cloak is actually there to stop her from becoming the wolf... It's an interesting way to twist the old fairytale. That said, Red has the most heartbreaking tale too.

What I find fascinating, overall, is the way they're twining the all the different fairy tales together is interesting. Red meeting Snow, who knows Cinderella etc. That fact that Rumple knows them all....
But aside from OUaT, I spent the week watching (or re-watching) the first season of Supernatural.
Which was enough to make me remember why I watched it in the first place. I can't say much about the later season obviously, since I never saw more than the first few episodes of season 2. But it's really enjoyable.
The stories are sometimes a bit predictable, but most of them are pretty well done. There's a great sense of humour running through the show which is great. I can see that there is an underlying story. There's what's happening with Sam, the demon that was responsible for the death of Sam and Dean's mother and definitely an underlying message about family. Which is good.
Actually I'd say all other things aside, family is probably the strongest part of the story. I think Dean and Sam are good characters and I'm hopeful they continue to grow and develop as characters because I think there's a lot of potential for that. It's an interesting dynamic between Sam and Dean and between them and their father. Sam may have the brains, but Dean is definitely intelligent. What I find most interesting about Dean is his devotion to his family. Despite the fact he feels they've left him behind or abandoned him, they're still the reason he keeps going.
Anyway, now I have to wait to get the next couple of seasons, but I definitely will...

Date: 17 March 2012 03:00 pm (UTC)Did you have any favorites from s1? I did a writing project where I wrote something for every s1 and s2 woman character. I really like Andrea Barr from Dead in the Water (aka Fred from Angel). I have two longish stories about Kat from Asylum. I really like Emily from Scarecrow too, though I need to write more about her. Did you like Dean's Girlfriend Cassie? I like her very well, but then, wait till you meet Lisa Braeden. :D I've also written more than one story about Haley from Wendigo, even though I initially hated Wendigo. I think my favorite of my s1 stories is about Layla and her reaper.
And of course, Missouri, and Meg!!!!
It's kind of ironic, but as the stories get more complicated and interesting, there are fewer incidental women characters. I'm not sure exactly if that's bad or good!
Anyways, I bet you will like s2 even more. Ben Edlund came onto the writing staff, penning Nightshifter (which was my personal hook into the series) and the awesomely scary and hilarious by turns, Simon Said. I've been following Edlund since the beginning of his career, basically wherever he goes I will follow. :D

Date: 17 March 2012 03:42 pm (UTC)I'm hopeful for season 2, though I know I saw the first few episodes when it was first on TV, but stopped watching after maybe half a dozen. I can't remember exactly why, think it was something else on at the same time and Supernatural lost out. Hopeful it didn't lose out because I didn't enjoy it and just lost out because whatever the other show was I wanted to see more.
Oh, not the point.
I admit, I quite liked Dead in the Water (I'm stealing the name from you, because I don't know 'em). Actually, I do find it interesting, the whole female character issue. They could add more permanent female characters, which might be nice, as long as they make them interesting and let them grow. Just don't want them to be completely helpless, so far I've enjoyed that fact most of them haven't been.
I admit, quite liked Meg :D

Date: 18 March 2012 09:20 pm (UTC)There were some very good episodes in s1 and it has one of my favourite season finales (I wasn't spoiled for it at all so it was SUCH a jaw-dropper) and then s2 has an amazing opener. :D :D
