Post the names of five fictional characters whose names begin with that letter, and your thoughts on each. The characters can be from books, movies, or TV shows. Comment, and I'll give you a letter!

Rose Tyler
So I could go into some very very long thing about why I love Rose, but if you've spent any time near here, you can probably figure out why. Rose is one of the characters you can relate to. She's pretty normal, hasn't seen much and stuck in a rut with little chance of anything more. But when the opportunity arises she takes it (ok, so she has to be asked twice, still). She's caring, compassionate but still human. She'll be a bit selfish, but she just wants to help and when it matters most she's incredibly selfless.

Rikku
Ok, so she's a character from a game. But if you've ever played Final Fantasy X and X-2, you'll realise that some games have better plots than some movies. Certainly better characters. Rikku is the cousin of main character Yuna. Rikku knows she's not the smartest, the strongest or the most important. But what she does know is family and friends are the most important thing and she'll fight with everything she has to protect and help them. On another note, Rikku is adorable. She is always trying to cheer people up and doesn't let anything get her down.

River Tam
She might be completely insane, but she's still an amazing character. She is a complete contradiction, she's strong physically but emotionally, she doesn't have that. River is beyond intelligent but has absolutely no idea how to live in the real world. She can look after herself but she is dependent on Simon. Personally, I will always love River for trying to fix the bible and telling Jayne she can kill him with her brain. But honestly, she's a unique character in so many ways, but so very much belonging to Whedon.

Rumplestiltskin
Forget Emma, forget Snow, Charming, Henry, even Regina. For me the most fascinating character on Once Upon a Time has got to be Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold. Not entirely sure whether he's good or evil. He seems to be a mixture. In some ways more real than most of his fairy tale world counterparts. He will help people but always for a price, that often isn't revealed until much later. He seems to have a distinctly tragic story as well as a nasty side. Seriously, I think a large part of my interest in this show stems from wanting to know what Rumplestiltskin is up to.

River Song
Because no list is complete without one character you intensely dislike. Oh look. Ok, I freely admit that I adore the Doctor/Rose. But that's not actually why I really dislike River. It's because she's a terrible character. (Actually, less a character and more a storytelling tool). Look, I can't say I actually liked her in s4 but I went into s5and s6 prepared to give her a chance. But every time she showed up in an episode I just disliked her more and more. Her character is incredibly smug, contradictory and aggravating. The fact that people say she is a strong female character annoys me. All she does is shoot things (gun =/= strong) and act like a more smug version of the Doctor without any of the charm and knowledge to back it up. And I'm not even touching the relationship between the Doctor and River except to say one thing. Obsession =/= love.

Rose = LOVE. I think Rose is one of the most real woman characters that I've had the privilege of exploring. She experiences her life so whole-heartedly, with no pretense and no holding backing. She's a little bit impulsive, but I think that's one reason I admire her so. There's a great interview with Eccleston where he points out that although the Doctor is the catalyst and brings energy to the story, Rose is really the hero and the heart of the story. (Chris is SO SMART and so unflinchingly honest about his work, my heart breaks for him sometimes. I want him to have ALL THE ROLES.)
Final fantasy: I have never played such a game. How do you learn about the characters-- they talk to you, or to each other, or what?
River Tam rocks.
Have not seen Once Upon a Time, but this character makes me want to!
River Song -- agreed. My biggest gripe with her character is the way that it never really comes together to form a complete person. I don't understand how she comes to be the person we first met. .... Oh well. Not invested!

Final Fantasy X (and X-2) has an amazing story that could essentially be turned into a movie with very few changes. The 'main' character narrates the story and the cut scenes introduce the characters and show them interacting. If you have a PS2 floating around and like RPGs I'd seriously recommend it.
River Tam rocks. *Nods*
I'd also recommend Once Upon a Time. New takes on the old fairy tales and their characters. With some nice mystery thrown in. Nothing bad there.
As for River, I agree. One of the biggest things about her character is she also isn't a character. She is completely and utterly defined by her relationship to the Doctor, either directly, through her parents or via his enemies. She is a tool to tell the story, not an actual character. *Sigh* There was potential there...

Nods head at Rose but you know I love Rose's character!
Yep, agree with you and Fannishliss, River Tam rocks!
I am on and off Once Upon a Time but you hit on the one character that really grabbed me! I loved loved loved the Beauty and the Beast episode! He is the most interesting character on that show.
River - sigh. I didn't mind her in Season 4 - she was interesting and had potential but I just found her lacking in Series 5 and 6. I think you hit it on the head, she lacks charm. The whole marriage thing to the Doctor was weird - she looked sort of like a love sick puppy and based on prior appearances in Series 5 & 6, it was OOC for her. Steps away from the soap box about how SM butchered her character.
Loved the Meme!

Rumple is awesome. Actually, I quite like trying to figure out Regina/Evil Queen too. I'm just really enjoying the show so, whatever it is, I don't mind :)
And yep, that's River.... *shakes head*
Would you like a letter??
