Something other than Who
Terrifying isn't it? Ok, maybe not, but it could be a first for me. I feel like a random ramble about other shows. Specifically, Bones and Fringe.
The new season of Bones has started, 2 episodes in now. I have loved this show since it started. Though admittedly I first heard about it cause David Boreanaz was in it. Ahh, the side effect of long term Whedon watching.
Anywoo, the new season started, and at the end of last season Bones was pregnant, to Booth. Which was kind of a surprise. But as a completely hope Bones/Brennan shipper I was kind of both hopeful and terrified of what this would do to the new season. The first episode though, had me squee-ing a little bit. They were all adorable. It gave me hope that getting them together wouldn't ruin anything. As sometimes happens on shows like this, get the characters with the UST together and down the drain it goes.
And maybe I'm just a hopeless little shipper, but watching those 2 in the second episode, Bones attempting to 'walk in' Booth's shoes was hilarious. I still love them. If they keep going like this I think it'll work out ok. I've always loved Bones trying to understand the emotional side to, well, pretty much everything.
Sooooo, Fringe.....
This one is interesting. They like to throw twists at you. Some are obvious, some not so much (well, not to me anyway). I love Peter/Olivia. So with what's been happening in the first 6 episodes of the new season, I feel rather sorry for Peter. Those two have absolutely no luck. And Walter, I adore Walter. I want him to be my uncle or something (though my Dad has some similarities to Walter so maybe I should just accept that). But poor guy, something worrying when he wants to lobotomise himself.
I admit to being a little bit worried when the season first started, but I find it's starting to pick up in the past 3 episodes. And the bit at the end of episode 6 both surprised me and was really obvious, but I can't help wondering if there's more to it than what they've given us so far. I mean they've been dropping hints that something isn't right, but given the re-write of the timeline (for lack of a better term) those odd variations could be explained away, but the changes are rather drastic really.
Oh well, be interesting to see what happens next....

This is so long. And not nice. I am so sorry.
I decided not to write that post, because I never want to be one of those fans who brings everybody else down with her complaints. Honestly, my point isn't even about Bones-- I just picked it because I'm very familiar with it. It's more that I think Fringe is hugely superior to pretty much any other show I watch in terms of intelligence, continuity, character depth and development, emotional resonance, and even dialogue. Obviously I haven't seen every show out there, so I can't argue it's the best there is, but I don't understand how ratings can be so low. I really, really don't.
I really need to shut up now. That definitely wasn't what you were looking for when you wrote the post. Sorry! I just read that ratings for the last Fringe episode were terrible, and it freaked me out because I thought it was a phenomenal episode.
Re: This is so long. And not nice. I am so sorry.
I wonder if the difference is in some ways I don't take Bones seriously. I mean I love the characters, the stories, but in the end I think it's the humour I adore the most.
And with Fringe, I find it very sad that more people don't appreciate this show. It's outstanding. For all the reasons you say really (I'd list them, but you did it so well). And I agree the latest episode was amazing.
I don't know about ratings in the US, but here, the show got shifted from a main free-to-air channel 9, to one of their secondaries (also best I can tell they're still on season 3), which means apparently it wasn't/isn't rating that well here either.
No more 2:30am LJ for me when I'm agitated
I think that's a good point about Bones... it was never about the humor for me, so when they decided to change the tone to be more humorous (somewhere around the end of season 4, although it was gradual), I mourned the loss of suspense and character depth a lot more than I appreciated the additional jokes and slapstick. I love humor in shows, but even for comedies I enjoy I never really care about the characters because they strike me as caricatures. Now I feel like I'm watching a comedy for which I formed the empathetic character bonds that I would normally only form for drama, meaning that when a character does something embarrassing (which is constant in Bones, since that's the type of comedy it is) I become viscerally embarrassed myself.
Re: No more 2:30am LJ for me when I'm agitated
I can understand what you mean. I think that's a personal preference for style and genre maybe? I mean of all the shows I love, current or old ones, I've had so many different reasons for watching them. With Bones, I love the characters because they have such exaggerations of what could be normal personalities. I love the humour because sometimes I like a show that has fun.
But on some shows, those same features would drive me insane, for example, if they did that on Fringe I would probably hate it. I don't know why that is, but I have been told I'm inconsistent.
